Another Year, Another Fair

I have to admit, the County Fair this year, did not bring back warm fond memories of childhood days. While I was working the concession stand for the Cadiz Business Association, in front of the grand stands, I kept constant tabs on the environment around me, and the people traveling in and out of view.
Watching the kids run up the hill, playing, chasing each other, started me off on that path down memory lane, when I was once that kid, running amok and wild, having the time of life. The county fair grounds back then were beautiful, even though I did not realize it then. The fair grounds were full of rides and activities, full of fun rides that looked to me anyhow, safe and full of potential excitement.
As I walked through the grounds, tonight, the very last night of the fair, I was deeply saddened. There were but a handful of vendors who had set up shop, and only two small rides. The grounds were an eye sore, as the once beautiful landscape, with all its giant oak trees, is now only a memory.
I am a big supporter of the coal industry here in Harrison County. Its our history, and it gives most of our families a common bond, but I cant say that the mining of the fairgrounds was something that didn’t leave a lasting scar.
Gone are the days of the Coal Festivel, and the county fair that was once so grand, at least to us. The gigantic sense of community. Gone are the days when the fair was a must on every families calendar.
Now I’m not going to sit and ask for an excuse, nor would I be willing to listen to one. A poor economy is not an excuse, nor does it take a hyper inflated one to bring our community together.
Something has to give. We had a fine sense of tradition once. Why cant we find it again?
