Veterans Day, Harrison County
Print This Story
Veterans Day kicked off in Harrison County at 11:00am this morning, on the public square. A brisk 50 degree wind kept the flags fluttering, and those holding them straining to maintain their ground. The turnout of local veterans and citizens was a healthy showing, with a representative from every generation, bowing their heads in remembrance of those who are serving, and those who have served before us.
Chaplains from various local veterans groups took their turns at the podium, offering solemn words to those that have been lost, as well as hope for those still in arms off in foreign lands.
One of the most amazing, and inspiring moments came when a speaker approached the microphone, gray \ white hair being wisped along by the strong wind.
He had a prepared speech that soon became apparent to everyone involved, that alot of thought, heart and emotion went into it. As he spoke of his trials and tribulations in the South Pacific while serving our nation during World War II. And of the trials facing our country now, and even his own grandson who has already
served a tour in Afghanistan, and is now on deployment in Iraq. As I am by no means a reporter, I do not have a verbatim copy, word for word of what was said, I will however procure a copy of his speech, to publish here.
What I can say, is that what I heard over the roar and din of the tractor trailers sitting idle at the red light, was enough to propel me through the crowds after the ceremony, to find this man, and shake his hand.
As soon as he closed with his speech, various representatives of local veteran and military groups presented wreaths at the foot of the veterans memorial on the square. Each person, placing the wreath down, standing back, and taking a respectful salute in honor of comrades past and present.
It soon became apparent that many long lost contacts between quite a few veterans were quickly re-established, handshakes were exchanged, and just as many smiles and stories of military life that will forever seem like it was just yesterday.
Forever In Our Hearts, and Minds.
Thank A Veteran.
