Christmas Packing for Harrison County Troops
Print This Story

The Harrison County Military Support Group made 33 service men and women over seas very happy Tuesday Dec. 1st. Over 50 volunteers met at the Cadiz Fire House and in 2 hours 66 boxes were assembled, packed and secured to be sent out. Volunteers from Wintersville, Smithfield, Scio, Jewett, Hopedale, Freeport, Cadiz and other areas of the county came together and filled boxes with goodies.
The list of items was outstanding. There were over 150 dozen home made cookies donated. Candy, Christmas trees with decorations, Santa hats, footies to keep their feet warm, 300 minute phone cards. The big ticket item was an MP3 player with a $15 ITune card was also sent.

It was decided that since the CD players were getting sand in them, MP3 players would be more practical. With the access to the Internet the ITunes card would help them get there favorite songs.
More items such as cans of fruit, cans of chips, eye drops and cameras were included.
The highlight of the evening was John De Bonis from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve presented Mike Cunningham of Cunningham Deer Processing and Taxidermy an award for above and beyond the call of duty. Mike has provided deed jerky for the last 3 years to the Military Support Group to send to the troops. He has also sent jerky to the troops on his own. I want to say thank you Mike for your contribution to the support group. The troops just love the jerky and always ask for it.

In closing I just want to thank each and every person who has helped the support group. The volunteers that packed, the monetary contributions from private people and organizations such as the Legions and VFW’s and all the cookie bakers.
And finially, I want to thank my wife Sue for her tireless work in making phone calls to get the correct address, for going and getting some of the goodies and all the extra things she does to make this a success. You are the greatest.
