Going Green

Print This Story Print This Story

Seems like everywhere you look, there is something either on TV, the radio, or somebody is talking about ‘going green’.  Before June 2010, I never really thought of ‘going green’ or how to go about doing it.  I mean, I really wanted to, but I just didn’t know how.  Then I got a call from a family friend that told me there was a program that I should look into and go apply for.  I was thrilled to apply because I needed a job since I had no way to go back to college.  I applied and got accepted.  The program, ironically enough, is called Green Ohio Corps.

The Green Ohio Corps, or GO Corps for short, is a program that chooses 15 adults ranging from the ages of 18 – 24 that live in either Tuscarawas County, Harrison County or Carroll County to work 900 hours at a specific job site.  The job is supposed to help them learn lessons to help them out in the future if they decided to go to a different job after they finish the program.

In my opinion, this is a wonderful program that helps young adults learn values and skills that they can take with them all of their lives.  I know I’ve learned a lot since I first joined this program.

Let me tell you a little about what I do in this program.  I work at My Local PC Pro in Cadiz, Ohio, but my main job  there is to update the site  I go around all of Harrison County, taking pictures and getting flyers to post here.  I also go to different events or do different activities and then write about my experience to post on the site as well.  If I find out about a small store or restaurant that needs more business, I get an interview and then write about the store or restaurant to post on this site too.  When I post information from the flyers I collect and post articles about different businesses, it helps get the events and businesses more customers and more attendants.

The going ‘green’ aspect of my job is that I don’t use any paper sinces it’s all virtual and I use the computer all of the time.  But, I am still trying to think of more ways to make my job more ‘green’.

Since I’ve started this program, I can honestly say that I have learned a great deal about my county and about going ‘geen’.  And I’m sure this program has helped the other participants in different ways as well.
