If you are looking for gifts with a nostalgic local connection, you need go no further than Harrison County.  This year, two organizations are offering calendars that will delight many from the Ohio Valley area.

If you have someone who is or was associated with the coal mines, and especially the “big machines”, a 2011 calendar featuring pictures of the Moutaineer is a must have.  Being sold by the Harrison Coal Reclamation and Historical Park, its pictures range from the behemoth being built in 1955, working in various pits, and “walking” to Egypt Valley.  Calendars may be purchased at the Cadiz/Harrison County Visitors Center (143 South Main St. (942-1102), at the Puskarich Library in Cadiz, the Scio Library  the Freeport Library, or from Dale Davis (740-391-4135).  The calendar costs $10.  Shipping is an additional $3.00.

“I stand as a testament to a generation and nation long gone to dust, built to span multiple lifetimes of the hands that built me.”  This is the first line of a poem entitled “The Barn,” by Jen Bicehouse that graces the cover of the 2011 Calendar of Harrison County Barns that the Stitch & Hitch 4-H Club has put together.  It is the fourth volume of a series.  The old barns are beautifully photographed, each one’s history documented in the caption.  The calendar is being sold for $12 by Stitch & Hitch 4-H club members or by contacting Loretta Pickens (740-946-0964), or may be purchased at the Cadiz/Harrison County Visitors Center (940-942-1102).
