Jewett Takes The Initiative

I have been watching with utmost interest at the developments taking place in Jewett O concerning the venerable Jewett Elementary building.  It has been standard practice around here to point out what is missing from our county, and randomly what our county does have.  There is also large circles of individuals who can suggest wonderful ideas and promote group effort into turning Harrison County around, but it usually stops there.

But there is an exception this time. And apparently the phoenix has risen from the ashes in Jewett, Ohio. The community has rallied around the old Elementary building that has lain dormant ever since it was deemed no longer viable to the county as a center of public education, and have given it a second chance in life.

Introducing the Jewett Wildcat Community Center.

The Jewett Wildcat Community Center is located in the former Harrison Jewett Elementary building. After the school district decided it needed to close Harrison Jewett Elementary it was offered to the town of Jewett to take over and maintain. The costs to heat and maintain the facility was great for the school. The town took over the building knowing it would need to create ways to use the facility to make money to support itself. The town formed a committee and decided to start a much needed Community Center for our community, children & families. The town is reaching out for  volunteers and businesses to help organize fund raisers and events to be conducted in the building. This center will be a place where we can come exercise, learn & meet our neighbors and instill strong values through sports, constructive hobbies and friendship for our youth.

Already in its infancy the J.W.C.C has sponsored a children’s dance and an area for exercise indoors. A quick glance at their event calendar located on their website shows you how fast the group is moving to fill a need within their village.

Cornhole Tournaments, Biddy Sports, Aerobics, Zumba, Cheerleading Fundamentals, Twirling as well as educational workshops, just to get started.

It is amazing what this group has done, with what they have, and what they are trying to accomplish. And although I do not hail from the Village of Jewett, I am quite proud of what is taking place, and everyone involved.

Take a visit over to the Jewett Wildcat Community Center Website, and add it to your favorites, and keep an eye on their events, Im sure you will find something that will benefit you.
