You’ll have the opportunity to talk with the soldiers, see what camp life was like and watch as the men fire the mountain howitzer – every hour on the hour starting at 9:30 a.m.

At 4:00 PM there will be a program at historic Dickerson Church just south of Cadiz. The soldiers from the encampment will march into the church grounds to honor Capt. Joe Dickerson and other Dickerson Church members who served during the Civil War. Dr. Scott Pendleton and Mr. Ray Ferrell of the Harrison County Historical Society will present a summary of the life of ” Capt. Joe ” The old church grounds are lovely. This is the spot where Matthew Simpson gave his life to the Lord at an old fashioned campground service. You will see the monument erected in his honor, as well as the grave of Thomas Dickerson, Founder of Dickerson Church and others. As a young lad, Thomas Dickerson served with General George Washington in the Revolutionary War.

Bishop Matthew Simpson was born in Cadiz on June 21, 1811. He was a prominent Bishop of the Methodist Church. He played a leading role in the Civil War, by speaking out against slavery, and in favor of the Union. He was a friend of President Lincoln and often filled in at speaking engagements when the President was not available to speak. Bishop Simpson delivered the funeral address for President Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois May 4, 1865.

At 7:00 PM back in the sanctuary of Scott Methodist Church, Dr. Scott Pendleton will portray Bishop Simpson who has returned to his Hometown of Cadiz for a visit. Judge Matthew Puskarich will portray a 19th Century Reporter interviewing the Bishop regarding his life as a young man in cadiz, as well as the years after he left his hometown.

ALL EVENTS are free and open to the public. The Cadiz Lions Club will be serving their famous pancake breakfast at Scott Church starting at 7:00 AM. After visiting the encampment on the Church Grounds, hot dogs and sausage sandwiches will be served for lunch.
