History Alive in Harrison County

A much anticipated event ( In this keyboard surfer’s eyes ) has arrived. The Civil War ” Living History ” Encampment by the 30th OVI ( Ohio Volunteer Infantry ), Co. B to be respectful, is currently taking place, on the grounds of Scott Methodist Church, right here in Cadiz. With my three children in tow, we were off to the Old Dickerson Church where a ceremony was to take place. The number of people who had gathered to take part the reliving of a piece of our local history, the idyllic church grounds,  gave an instant sense of belonging.

With a loud roar of the mountain howitzer ending all private conversations, all ears and eyes strained as members of the 30th OVI, marched up the road towards the church, keeping in step with the rythm of their drummer, ending in front of the crowd gathered, where a prayer was said in honor of the sacrifices made by members of our county during the Civil war, followed by a volley of muskets.

In quick procession the crowd filed into the old Church where seats were quickly filled. The members of the 30th ( Including our Own Dave Rose, acting as a standard bearer ) proceeded to present the colors at the front of the church. And in walked man dressed in period clothing to address the crowd. On most days, members of this county know him as Dr.Scott Pendleton of the Cadiz Animal Clinic, on this day however, It was Bishop Mathew Simpson.

Dr. Pendleton quickly captured the attention of  all those inside the beautiful church with a story and pieces of local history, that most have never heard. As he spoke, even my children sat still and in silence, mesmorized by what they were hearing. I can not deny that even I, was captivated and found myself wanting to know more, even as everyone applauded, and the church emptied.

This Event as I write, is still currently in progress down at Scott Church, and for all of those reading this now, I encourage you to head that way, as it is well worth the time you give.
Well done, to everyone involved in this event, it was, outstanding.
