SCIO- School bells will soon be ringing, and Harrison Hills City Schools and local organizations are getting students ready to return.

The Fifth Annual Back To School Rally/Family Fun Fair is scheduled for Aug. 23 from 1-3 p.m. at Barr Memorial Gym behind Harrison North Elementary School in Scio. Activities will be held in the afternoon to accommodate open houses that day at Harrison Central Jr./Sr. High School, Harrison North and Harrison East Elementary. HCHS and Harrison East will conduct their open houses from 9-11 a.m. while Harrison North hosts its event at 9 a.m. to noon.

Afterwards, district students are invited to the Barr building for food, inflatable rides, games and free information and school supplies. More than 500 people have attended in previous years and organizers are hoping for another strong turnout.

“We’ll have open houses in the morning and the staff will man the tables and mingle with the students [at the fair],” commented District Administrative Assistant Dana Snider, who co-chairs the event with Pam Parrish of Harrison Community Hospital.

Parrish said pupils and their families can enjoy pizza, refreshments and other activities throughout the day. It will feature 15 booths with representatives from Harrison Community Hospital, Harrison County OSU Extension Office, Society for Equal Access, WIC, United Health Care, Molina and the county Department of Job and Family Services, to name a few. Teachers will be available to answer questions and free school supplies will be distributed to the students. In addition, Gables Care Center and Sunnyslope Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will provide popcorn to the public.

“It will be a lot of fun and lets parents know we appreciate all the hard work they do,” Parrish said.

The event is sponsored by the Harrison County Family and Children First Council, Harrison Hills City Schools and local businesses. For the past several years, efforts were combined with the annual Family Fun Fair activities previously held in September.
