Coffland to fulfill school board term

CADIZ- The Harrison Hills City School Board of Education has new addition after Paul Coffland was selected to fill an open slot on the panel.

During a special meeting on Wednesday, Coffland was appointed to temporarily hold the seat left by longtime member Kinney Thompson, who resigned last month after serving for more than two decades. Officials said seven letters of interest were received to fill the remainder of Thompson’s term that expires this year, while voters will decide a long-term replacement at the Nov. 8 general election.

Coffland, a lifelong Cadiz resident, is a 1987 graduate of Cadiz High School and former village councilman. He has been active with the district through coaching and serving on prior school levy committees. Coffland is currently part of the district’s 10-year planning committee and said he is up for the task as a school board official.

“I’ve always been involved with the schools and keep up to date,” he said. “It’s obviously short-term, but I’m truly looking out for what’s in the best interest of every kid in the county. I have a keen interest in where this district is going and am willing to do what I can to help move it forward. The school system has done some drastic things to avoid fiscal watch and fiscal emergency. I hate to see schools close, but the reality is we had to, and when a school closes it affects everyone.”

Once he ends his short stint, Coffland plans to run for Harrison County Commissioner in 2012. He said the school board and county roles go hand in hand because it is all about improving the system.

“I think being on the school board is an important position, and as a commissioner I am viewing it as another opportunity to be involved in the community and the county,” Coffland added. “I want the county to be a place where our kids can go to college and come back to work and raise a family. There are some areas that work well and there are some that can be improved upon. Everyone has to be involved and on the same page.”

For now, school board members are welcoming him into the fold and say he is a great addition for an albeit brief tenure.

“He’s been very involved behind the scenes,” said board President Deborah Kenny, who alluded to his time coaching and leading the levy committees. “He’s been very supportive of the district.”

Vice President Judy Crawshaw said Harrison Hills was pleased to have him on board, while fellow member Melvin Allen noted the panel made a solid decision.

“He would be a good member of the board,” added board member Bob Hugh. “It would be a good experience for him.”

Coffland’s officially begins his duties at the next regular board meeting on Aug. 25.
