Flu shots at Custer Pharmacy

Each year, influenza causes about 200,000 hospitalizations and results in an average of 25,000 deaths in the U.S. The majority of flu-related deaths occur among people age 65 years and older; however some deaths occur in otherwise healthy people and children. The single best way to protect against the flu virus is simple: get a yearly flu vaccine. Anyone who wants to reduce their chances of catching the flu can get vaccinated. However, it is especially important for those at high risk of serious flu-related complications, or those who live or work with those in high-risk groups. This includes pregnant women, children younger than 5 years of age, adults 50 years of age and older, and those who live in nursing homes. Those with certain chronic medical conditions are also at increased risk of influenza complications. This includes conditions such as asthma, cerebral palsy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, epilepsy, HIV-AIDS, kidney or liver disease, muscular dystrophy, obesity, and sickle cell disease.

Flu season can start as early as October and last until as late as May. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, “Vaccination before December is best since this timing ensures that protective antibodies are in place before flu activity is typically at its highest.” The 2011-2012 flu vaccine will protect against influenza A H1N1 virus, influenza A H3N2 virus and an influenza B virus.

The CDC recommends that people get vaccinated as soon as the vaccine becomes available in their community. Custer Pharmacy will be providing influenza vaccines throughout the months of August, September, October, and November. If you have Medicare it costs you nothing.  No appointment is necessary!
