Western Grill, TIMC Business of the Month

Our October featured locally owned business of the month is Western Grill.  Located at 216 Main Street in Bowerston.

When you walk into Western Grill whether a member of the community or a stranger from out of town, your are greeted with a smile and kind word.  The greetings don’t come just from the waitress but the patrons as well.  When I walked in at nine o’clock in the morning a couple sitting in the middle of the restaurant looked up from their meal and conversation to say good morning and genuinely ask how I was doing.

Ryan Smith, owner of Western Grill, answered my questions as he cooked breakfasts for his patrons.  When I asked him why he wanted to open a restaurant in Bowerston, his answer was simple.  He learned to love the small town restaurant style from his mother who owns and operates the Carrollton Western Grill and that’s what he wanted and was able to create by opening his own restaurant 7 1/2 years ago in the small town of Bowerston.

When I asked him why he thought he was able to survive this long in such a small community, particularly the way the economy is now.  He said that was simple too.  He know the economy is hard for everyone and he does his best to try not raise prices unless he absolutely has to.  An example of this would be a cup of coffee.  Seven and a half years ago when he opened the doors, a bottomless cup of coffee was $0.75, today it is just $0.99.  Ryan tries not to change his prices unless he has to and keep everything affordable.

What makes Western Grill so special?  Well, if you ask the patrons they can’t give you an exact reason.  Maybe it’s the home-style cooked food, or maybe the reasonable pricing, or maybe it’s the warm friendly atmosphere.  Ryan feels it is all of this and more.  This is their place to come visit and enjoy a family style setting.  They discuss everything from the weather to politics.  Ryan explained to me that he stays in the back and lets everyone talk openly about everything.  This is their place and he just provides the food and coffee.  “I don’t think a morning goes by that a disagreement over someones views doesn’t erupt.  But it’s all good natured because they are always back the next morning picking the conversation up right where it left off before the disagreement started.”

Ryan has standard daily specials with such things as Spaghetti or Chicken Alfredo on Tuesday, Friday always has a Fish Special and Meatloaf on Saturday.  Western Grill is open seven days a week.  Monday – Thursday 7am – 8pm, Friday & Saturday 7am – 9pm and Sunday 7am – 3pm.

Be sure to stop in and enjoy some great home-cooked food and warm and inviting atmosphere.
