The Hope Players will present Neil Simon’s comedy, “Fools,” this weekend, with performances Friday and Saturday, November 4 and 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 6, at 2:00 p.m. at Harrison East Elementary School in Hopedale.

“Fools” tells the story of the efforts of love-struck teacher Leon Tolchinsky to lift the curse of stupidity that has plagued the small Ukrainian town of Kulyenchikov for two hundred years. Leon is opposed in his efforts by Count Gregor, who also is his rival for the affections of the lovely but dim-witted Sophia Zubritsky.

According to Hope Players executive director Andrew Pelegreen III of Hopedale, who is directing the comedy, “Fools” is a perfect fit for the local community theatre. “’Fools’ is the perfect show for all family members, with its fairy tale quality, elements of romantic comedy and vaudeville-style humor, as well as its total lack of meanness or cynicism,” Pelegreen said.

When “Fools” opened on Broadway, in April of 1981, it closed after only 41 performances. But it soon found new life in both professional and community theatres across the nation. “The appeal of ‘Fools’ is obvious for anyone involved in theatre,” Pelegreen said. “It’s family-friendly, it’s funny and it lends itself to all sorts of different ways of producing the show,” he added.

The cast of “Fools” includes Cerra Atkins of Hopedale and Kira Adams of Jewett alternating in the roles of Sophia Zubritsky and Mishkin the postal worker, with Adkins playing Sophia on Friday and Sunday, and Adams on Sunday. Adams will portray Mishkin on Friday and Saturday.

The rest of the cast includes: Jacob Kasarda of Cadiz as Leon Tolchinsky, Dylan Moore of Jewett as Count Gregor Yousekevitch, Tracy Henthorn of Rayland as Dr. Nikolai Zubritsky, Margaret Richardson of Tiltonsville as Lenya Zubritssky, Steve Fournier of Weirton as Schnetsky the Shepherd, Leah Rose of Hopedale as Slovitch, Catherine Losey of Steubenville as Yenchna the Vendor and Ruby Foutz of Jewett as the Magistrate.

Advance tickets for “Fools” are available from any cast or crew member, or at the Hopedale Municipal Building, Monday through Friday from9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Those who purchase tickets in advance will save two dollars over the box office prices of $7 for adults and $5 for children. Further information is available by contacting Pelegreen at (740) 937-2629, or Hope Players president Donna Runt at (740) 937-2208.
