Merry Christmas!

As I grew up here in Harrison County, we did not have a lot of money, but we were rich with love and family.  Christmas for me growing up consisted of one special gift, a couple of school outfits and new underwear and socks.  We may have gotten a couple of small toys or books, but not much more.  One year after returning to school from our holiday break, I heard all my friends talking about ALL the fun stuff they had gotten.  I went home and asked my mom why my friends had received so much more than me.  I didn’t think it was fair.  My mother sat me down to have a heart to heart.  She could have tried to explain to me how we were a one income family and just didn’t have the money, but no, instead she told me a story.  The story she told me was of the first Christmas.  I heard that story every year of my life, but never quite like this.

As Mary & Joseph entered Bethlehem and found that there was no room at the Inn, they did not get upset or stressed, they gratefully went to the stable to have a warm, quiet, soft place to rest.  After baby Jesus was born He received some visitors from near and far.  The shepherds brought no gifts except their love and gratitude.  The three visitors from afar each brought a single gift; gold, frankincense and myrrh.  Confused, I told my mother I already knew this story by heart.  She looked me in the eye and said, “If the reason we are celebrating Christmas is because of Jesus’s birth and He was perfectly content with lots of love and 3 gifts, what makes us so much more special to want or need more?”

So, as we all enter this holiday season, remember why we are celebrating.  The number of gifts we give or recieve does not measure the success of the holiday, it is the amount of love we give and recieve that does.  Merry Christmas to you all!!
