Becoming a Foreign Exchange Host Family

Print This Story Print This Story

Have you ever wanted to experience cultures of another country while sharing your own?  By hosting a foreign exchange student you can do both.  As a host family you are able to learn how many differences AND similarities there are between the way we live and other countries do.

The students that are involved with PAX (a non-profit organizations that helps to find host families and place students) have had a minimum of three years of English class and part of the interview process is even done in English.  So the students come into America with basic written and oral English proficiency with the expectancy to learn more as they are here.  The students want to come America to become part of an American family and participate in an American high school.  They want to become part of a family, not travel.

Host families choose what country they are most interested in.  They also choose their student based on interests, sports, activities and gender.  Ryan Dunfee, the local Community Coordinator for PAX, works very hard to make sure the student and host family “fit together”.  “The program may only last a few months, but it will last a lifetime with the memories and friendships that are created,” Ryan said.

Students stay with their host family for either a school semester or a school year and participate in all high school activities just like any other student.  They play sports, join the band, drama, choir, and most importantly MAKE FRIENDS.

Host families don’t have to have high school kids of their own.  They can be single parents, young families or even retirees.  The only thing that is asked of the host family is to treat the student like they are one of the family.

Anybody interested in becoming a host family should contact Ryan at (740) 269-8888 or (740) 229-0103.  Even if you are slightly interested, Ryan can give you more information and details as to how the program works or visit
