How To: Easily Backup Your Files

Print This Story Print This Story

What You Need:

  • External Hard Drive ( And Plug It In! )
( I prefer 500 GB Size due to my mistrust of the larger ones. But to each his own! )

Step One:
Open the “Start” menu and click “Control Panel.”
Find the “System and Security” section.
Click “Backup Your Computer”

Step Two:
Once you click “Backup Your Computer”  Locate and find on the right hand side of the screen, “Set up Backup” and click it.

A Windows dialog box will appear, and scan for available drives.

Once it has compiled a list, it will display all the
hard drives \ flash drives on your system.

Locate the external drive that you plugged in.
Click on that drive, and click “Next

Step Three:
Pick a backup option. If you let Windows decide, all your user files will be backed up, but Windows won’t back up
programs, items in the Recycle Bin, temporary files etc.
If you are unsure, by default, let Windows decide. ( Your documents folder, pictures, music, etc etc ) will be saved.
The manual option lets you select specific folders you want. ( If you are so inclined )

Step Four:

Click “Next” after selecting an option, and after selecting the files to back up if you did decide to choose the manual option,
Windows automatically creates a schedule, click “Change schedule” if you prefer a different back up time.
Click “Save settings and run backup” once you’ve finished editing the backup.

And you’ve finished! Windows 7 despite it’s shortfalls, is still a remarkably user friendly system.
