CADIZ- U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Chance Strane will be recognized with the Sally Buffalo Park Board’s Award of Excellence during the 14th Annual Cadiz Community Recognition Banquet on March 17.

Strane, of Cadiz, is a Harrison Central High School graduate and currently serves in the USMC’s Marine Personal Rankings Unit performing legal administration and data management. He previously served with the Cadiz Boy Scout Troop 269 and created a two-mile walking trail across Sally Buffalo Park last spring as his Eagle Scout project. Most of the terrain is level along a former mining road, but there are some steep sites and the trail provides a scenic view for both walkers and hikers. That project also helped him earn his latest distinction from the park board.

He is a third-generation Boy Scout and reached Eagle Scout status shortly before entering the military. During his time with Troop 269, he was also active in the Youth Corps, summer camp staff and Order of the Arrow and is also one of the few scouts that attended a national leader-training course. In addition, he gained National Woodsman Award for his trailblazing efforts at the park and a Good Citizenship Award from the Marine Corps League. While in the Marines, he has received meritorious honors and is slated to participate in the Marine Corps marathon and possibly the Spartan decathlon. His father, Michael, will accept the park’s award on his behalf during the banquet.

The event is sponsored by the Cadiz Business Association, Sally Buffalo Park Board and Harrison News-Herald with additional financial support by Frontier Communications and Valley Rentals. Social hour starts at 6 p.m. with dinner and awards at 7 p.m.

Seven awards will be presented that evening by the CBA, Sally Buffalo Park Board, Harrison News-Herald, Cadiz Lions Club, the Woman’s Civic Club of Cadiz and the Cadiz Lions Club. Adrian Pincola will return as Master of Ceremonies with musical entertainment by The Hoyts of Scio and DJ Jeremy Thompson and dinner catered by Capraro’s Restaurant of Hopedale. Tickets are $25 each and will only be sold in advance. They are available now at Harrison News-Herald, Cadiz-Harrison County Visitor’s Center, PNC Bank, Nancy’s Flowers and Gifts, Huntington Bank and Orme’s Hardware.
