CADIZ- Harrison Central Jr./Sr. High School FFA members are following the rules to an important matchup on Dec. 14.

About 20 students on the junior and senior teams will head to Columbus to participate in a state parliamentary procedure competition at Ohio State University. Team members must complete a 35-question test regarding Roberts’ Rules of Order and each answer is worth a half-point. The groups must also demonstrate a business meeting to show their knowledge of proper protocols.

Representing the senior team are President Callie Eberhart, Vice President Chelsea Toland, Secretary Abby Dodds, Treasurer Katie Stackhouse, Reporter Sadie Meredith, Student Adviser Kaci Carter, Sentinel Adam Fisher and member Zack Jones, while alternates are Brett Knight, Melissa Watson and Mariah Chura.

Junior teammates include President Joelle Jones, Vice President Kaylee Toland, Secretary Samantha Raber, Treasurer Emma Cline, Reporter D.J. Keesey, Student Adviser Lindsay Dowdle, Sentinel Kristina Cologie and member Megan Barcroft.

“Our team has not participated before, but Harrison Central has and 2009-10 was the last time the school went to state,” commented Dodds. “We’re extremely proud and nervous.”

Both groups have performed well thus far, with the senior team winning first place at the subdistrict competition at Edison Local High School on Nov. 20 and finishing second at the District 8 meet on Nov. 22 in Marietta. Meanwhile, the junior, or novice, team also won the top spot during the district round. The events are judged by teachers from other districts and top finishers face teams from across Ohio next weekend. The first-place winner will qualify for nationals while the second-place team heads to the eastern regional contest. Additionally, the top five teams receive banners for their efforts. The last time Harrison Central earned one was in 2005, but the students want to bring one back this year.

Advisor Don Jones said District 8, in which the local FFA is located, was very competitive and two of its teams have made the state’s Top Five. He is equally proud of his students and said they have devoted a lot of time since October to prepare for the upcoming contest.

“I’m proud of both teams because they have had to work hard to get where they are. I’m very proud because they’ve dedicated time to it,” Jones added. “Both teams want to put a banner on the wall.”

The teams will showcase their skills with a special demonstration for the public on Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
