Fundraiser under way for Close Up Program

CADIZ- Five local students hope to witness history next month, but it will take some extra money to make that dream come true.

Harrison Central Jr./Sr. High School students Drew Horn, Katie Parkinson, Jeremy Spoonemore, Marissa Bennett and James Thompson plan to visit Washington, D.C., on Jan. 16-23 to participate in the inauguration of President Barack Obama as part of the Close Up Program, a weeklong government studies program offered to high school students across the nation. Harrison Central has participated for the past 24 years and students are selected in a competitive process based upon academics.

Advisor Duran Morgan said they would be paired with students from around the country. The itinerary typically includes seminars and workshops with representatives, senators, lobbyists, media personnel and representatives of the judicial and executive branches, while pupils have also gained cultural experience through productions or other events at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The program reflects the belief that a close-up look at government encourages students to grow in their understanding of the democratic process and become productive and proactive community leaders.

While the five pupils have worked to raise funds, more assistance is still needed to attend.

“Our students have held dances and various fundraisers and enjoy community support from both businesses and individuals alike,” said Morgan. “Our program requires funding regardless of a student’s financial situation and we are working hard to seek additional support.”

Candy sales are set and the plan is to reach the financial goal by mid-January. Anyone interested in donating to the cause can make a check payable to Harrison Central Jr./Sr. High School, in care of Duran Morgan and the Close Up Program, and send it to 440 E. Market St., Cadiz, Ohio, 43907. For more information, contact Morgan at 740-942-7700.
